BMI Calculator for Women
Women naturally have a higher body fat percentage than men. Find out what this means for your BMI.
Why Is BMI Different for Women?
The BMI value is calculated using the same formula for women and men, but body composition differs significantly. Women have a biologically higher body fat percentage: a healthy range is 21–31% for women, compared to 14–25% for men. BMI does not account for this difference – meaning an athletic woman and a sedentary woman with the same BMI can have very different body compositions.
What Is a Healthy BMI for Women?
The generally recommended BMI range of 18.5–24.9 is considered normal weight. For women, however, note that: athletic women with high muscle mass can have a BMI of 25–27 and still have a low body fat percentage. Conversely, a sedentary woman with BMI 23 and little muscle mass may have an elevated body fat percentage. Waist circumference (under 80 cm) is an equally important health indicator for women.
Menopause and BMI
After menopause, fat distribution in the female body changes: fat shifts from the hips and thighs to the abdominal area. Since abdominal fat (visceral fat) is associated with higher cardiovascular risks, waist circumference becomes more important than BMI alone after menopause. Women over 50 should pay particular attention to their waist circumference alongside BMI.
