How Many Calories Do Men Need Daily?

Men burn more calories on average than women due to higher muscle mass and larger body surface. Daily needs range from 2,000 to 3,000 kcal depending on activity. Very active men (e.g. strength athletes) may need 3,000–4,000 kcal.

Calories for Men During Muscle Gain

For optimal muscle gain, we recommend a calorie surplus of 200–400 kcal above TDEE, combined with a protein intake of 1.6–2.2 g per kg body weight. Excessively high surpluses mainly lead to fat gain.

Calories for Men When Losing Weight

A deficit of 400–600 kcal daily is ideal for men – slightly more aggressive than for women, since men burn more calories through higher muscle mass. We recommend not going below 1,500 kcal daily.
