Are Women's Calorie Needs Different?

Yes – women generally have a lower basal metabolic rate than men of the same height and weight, due to a higher body fat percentage and hormonally influenced metabolism. The menstrual cycle can influence daily expenditure by 100–300 kcal. Our formula (Mifflin-St. Jeor) accounts for these differences.

How Many Calories Do Women Need Daily?

Average daily needs range from 1,600 to 2,400 kcal depending on activity level. For moderate weight loss, we recommend a deficit of 300–400 kcal daily. For muscle gain, a surplus of 200–250 kcal. We advise women not to go below 1,200 kcal daily – this can lead to nutrient deficiencies and muscle loss.

What Particularly Affects Women's Calorie Needs?

Pregnancy (+300–500 kcal/day), breastfeeding (+400–500 kcal/day), menopause (reduces BMR by approx. 5–10%), activity level, muscle mass and hormonal contraceptives can all influence energy requirements.
